West Dean 2008, day 3

Spent most of today finishing the bell.

Here is the workpiece mounted onto a mandrel shaped to fit the internal profile of the bell.

...marked up ready to have the various reference diameters turned...

...starting to rough-turn it down to a few mm over-size...

Each marked point is turned to just over final diameter (about 0.5mm oversize), and then the waste is removed up to the measured point.

The process results in a series of steps as the desired profile starts to emerge

The steps are removed to give a first approximation to the final profile

The curve is smoothed out to reach the final profile, decorative beads have been added to the rim, and just below the jointing ring where the fontanelle will sit, and the whole piece is thoroughly sanded through the grades from 120 to 400 grit.

2 views of the finished bell.
